Melaine ‘A’s reign as defending East Coast Champions of the Demerara Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ football challenge came to an end on Friday night.
Their quest to repeat as champions ended when they were beaten 1-0 by Nabaclis, who will now advance to the semi-finals.
Beterverwagting ‘A’, Plaisance ‘A’ and Melanie ‘B’ also booked their spots in the semis. Beterverwagting ‘A’ became the first team to make the final four when they blanked their ‘B’ counterparts 3-0, courtesy of a double from Akeem Curry.
The Plaisance ‘A’ versus Paradise encounter was worth its weight in gold. Darwin London put Paradise up 1-0 in the third minute, but Carlos Matthews equalised for Plaisance ‘A’ four minutes later. Warren Gilkes broke the deadlock when he scored the winner in the 14th minute.
Amuneke Rogers scored the lone goal in the ninth minute to send Melanie ‘B’ through ahead of Buxton.
The semi-finals will be played at the same venue on Wednesday, with Plaisance ‘A’ taking on BV ‘A’ and Nabaclis taking on Melanie ‘B’.
The final will kick off four days later at the same venue, with the winners of the event receiving $300, 000 and the championship trophy.
