After receiving a tip-off, Registrar, Pharmacy & Poison Board, Khame Sharma, and Inspector of Pharmacy, Shivanand Geer, along with a Police Officer, proceeded to a bond in West Ruimveldt, where the items were being packed onto the vehicle by labourers.

Following their timely intervention, a quantity of Carnation Milk, Mak-C drink mix, Dry Pigeon Peas, Delisa Nutrient Boost, Channa, Mixed Vegetables, and Royal Jello, along with Hugs Fruit Berry juice and gloves were seized and taken into the ministry’s bond for further investigation.

The storage conditions of the goods were also deplorable and unhealthy, as rotting goods, such as potatoes, were seen among them, and the labels were torn and discoloured with mildew.

Speaking to the Government Information Agency (GINA), Mr. Sharma pointed out that the board has been receiving numerous complaints of these products, which are distributed countrywide. He added that there have been many attempts to source them, but they were all futile.

The marketing of such goods are hazardous to human health, and for this reason the ministry will continue to be on the lookout for them on the local market. Citizens are advised to report any suspicious and similar activities or storage conditions brought to their attention, as they pose a threat to them and their families.

Coffee drinks:
Whether it’s what you use to get you going in the morning, or your
favorite afternoon treat, beware of what’s going in your coffee cup.
“Those fancy drinks can pack a big calorie punch, not to mention
saturated fat and sugar,” warns Tara Gidus, RD, sports nutritionist and
team dietitian for the Orlando Magic. In fact, a grande mocha drink will
add 260 calories your daily count (by comparison, three Oreo cookies
has 160 calories and 7 grams of fat). Skip the chocolate syrup and
whipped cream, and get your coffee drinks made with low- or non-fat milk
instead.
Fat-free snacks:
It may seem counterintuitive, but seeking out something that proclaims
“fat-free” on the label may be wrecking your diet. “When the fat’s
removed, sugar and/or sodium are generally added,” says Libby Mills,
RDN, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. So check
the calorie counts and sugar grams—in addition to fat grams—on the
label of your snacks before you indulge.

For the most part, these snacks are no better for you than potato chips
(and certainly no substitute for eating your veggies!). Even the baked
varieties can still pack a lot of unwanted fat and calories. They are
fine for a once-in-awhile treat, but don’t kid yourself that they are a
truly healthy snack.

Diet soda:
While diet sodas typically have few—if any—calories, that doesn’t
necessarily make them a good choice of beverage. “They contain
artificial sweeteners to achieve the same sweet, addicting taste as
regular soda,” says Gidus. “And that not only keeps you coming back for
more, but studies have shown they might be hindering your weight loss
efforts by making you crave other sugary foods.” A better choice: brew
your own herbal iced tea or add a splash of juice to sparkling water.

Salads:
Of course, a salad can be one of the healthiest choices you can
make—for a meal or a side dish. But be careful not to get fooled by
anything that calls itself a salad. Taking a sprinkling of lettuce and
veggies and then piling the bowl with high-fat, high-calories extras and
topping it with creamy dressing can lead to a 1,000 calorie salad.
Conversely, having a very spare salad can set you up for over-indulging
later. “The ‘I’ll just have a salad’ mentality—especially at lunch—can
leave you more hungry and unable to get through the afternoon without
snacking,” says Mary Ryan, RD, owner of Beyond Broccolli Nutritional
Counseling, Jackson, WY.

Scientists Develop Beer That Doesn't Give You A Hangover

Nausea, a very sore head, and possibly some feelings of regret and shame: it’s the dreaded hangover that none of us look forward to. One of the reasons that drinking too much alcohol causes you to feel so rough the next day is that it leads to an increase in urine production, which makes you dehydrated.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could chug away at your favorite beer without experiencing this unpleasant side effect? Well, it turns out that a group of Australian nutrition researchers have already been working on achieving just that, and managed to brew up a “hangover-free” beer last year. While it might make you feel a little less groggy the next day, it can’t unfortunately take away the beer goggles that inevitably accompany the sweet, amber nectar.

To make their wonder beer, scientists at Griffith University’s Health Institute added electrolytes—substances that affect the amount of water in your body—to two different commercial beers, one regular strength and one light. They then gave the beverages to volunteers that had just completed a rigorous work out.
Light beer laced with electrolytes was found to be three times more hydrating than normal beer, although the researchers caution that drinking alcohol after exercise is still not the wisest idea because it can have all sorts of nasty effects, such as decreased risk awareness. However, they accept that telling people what they should and shouldn’t do is often a fruitless endeavour, so working towards reducing danger is probably a better way to approach the situation.

“We know that beer is a very popular drink with people, particularly after sport or exertion,” scientist Ben Desbrow told ABC News. “From our perspective it’s about exploring harm minimization approaches that may still allow people to potentially drink beer as a beverage, but lower the risks associated with the alcohol consumption—and hopefully improve rehydration potential.”

Unfortunately, the beer was only found to be rehydrating when products with a low alcohol content were used. Apparently the participants couldn’t taste the difference, although I’m sure some beer connoisseurs are raising their eyebrows right now. We don’t mind offering our services as taste testers. Bottoms up!
