NEW YORK, United States, Friday January 2, 2015 – Comedian Adam Sandler has the dubious distinction of topping Forbes’ list of Hollywood’s most overpaid actors for the second year in a row.
The box office booby prize rankings were determined by Forbes after comparing actors’ estimated pay with the budget and revenue of the last three films they starred in up to June 2014.
The list did not include animated films or cameo appearances.
LOS ANGELES - SEP 30: Adam Sandler at the "Men, Women And ChildMeanwhile, although Sandler’s latest movie “Grown Ups 2” took in a respectable US$246m at the global box office, it couldn’t compensate for the disappointing takings of the 48-year-old’s previous releases “Jack and Jill” and “That’s My Boy,” both of which failed to impress either critics or audiences.
During the period under review, it is estimated that for every $1 Sandler was paid, he returned an average of just $3.20.
Coming in at a surprising second place on the magazine’s overpaid list was award-winning “Sweeney Todd” star Johnny Depp, who returned an average of $4.10 for each dollar he was paid.
The 51-year-old “Pirates of the Caribbean” heartthrob’s average was lowered by the poor box office returns from “The Lone Ranger” and “Dark Shadows.”
Rounding off the top three was “Night at the Museum: Secrets of the Tomb” star Ben Stiller. The comedian’s estimated return of $4.80 is accounted for by poor box office receipts from “Tower Heist” and “The Watch.”
The top five was completed by Ryan Reynolds, with a return of $4.90 for each dollar paid, and another surprise inclusion on the list, Oscar winner Tom Hanks, who raked in a meagre $5.20 return.
“Cloud Atlas,” in which Hanks took on six roles, was described as an expensive flop for the actor by Forbes.
Another surprise entry was America’s sweetheart Sandra Bullock, the only actress to appear on the list, who took ninth place with a return of $9.
Will Ferrell ($6.60), Channing Tatum ($6.70), Denzel Washington ($6.90) and Ben Affleck ($9.37) rounded off the top 10 on a list they’d probably rather forget.
